Why you must ditch the trends!

Trends aren’t a bad thing at all, in fact they dictate a lot of what we see in stores, online and in real life. There is always an underlying trend in everything we see and do, however when it gets to the stage when you are following a trend so closely that you’re missing the “YOU” in your interiors, I feel the urge to press the ALERT button!

Get your inspo juices flowing!

But where to start? Even if you aren’t the most creative person out there, I know for a fact you will know what you like and what you don’t. Write down, what kind of things that you would like to see in your home. Perhaps you like the idea of minimalism, or you prefer the house to look lived in with “stuff” on display. Do you enjoy dark colours, or prefer rooms to feel more airy? Which colours would you go for warmer red tones, or cooler blues? Are you a fan of metallic accents, or more wood finishes? Start this process by writing down what you like, and if you see anything that sparks your interest- note down what it was you liked about that space.

Work with what you have!

As we go through life, we collect and keep items that sit in each home we have. Whether that’s a Vase your grandmother gave, or a chair you love the colour of. Its these pieces that make your home, you! However, if we are too concerned with trends, we may start questioning our loved items and they get subjected to storage until they come back “in fashion.”

This makes me sad! Embrace those elements into your home, show them off and let them tell their story. There are reasons you keep these items, and it’s mainly because you like the look vs the sentimental value. If they were purely sentimental, they would already be in storage- right? You have them, for their colour, texture, shape or just how practical they are. Work with these and let them guide you into your style.

Pinterest is your BFF!

A fabulous platform, which i sometimes feel is really underrated (unless you’re planning a wedding) is Pinterest. You can get so lost in the rabbit hole of images on this platform, but the ability to pin and search is wonderful. Most of us, find it much easier to visualise what we like vs describe it. So I always encourage my clients to collaborate with me on Pinterest, as it is the best way to know what they are envisioning for their final fit.

Start searching, pinning down the colours you liked of a space, the furniture layout, perhaps the way the lighting is used. Have a look clearly at all the pictures you have pinned and there will  no doubt be a running theme. Maybe you never realised you’re more Boho vs Modern, or perhaps you’re more Maximalist than you realised.

Oh and on that, don’t get too caught up on titles of your style. It doesn’t matter- the point is, you will realise there is a trend running through your mind that speaks to your personality, lifestyle and interests.

Do you Hun!

The main aim of any interior space, is to create a feeling that brings you joy when you enter the room. It could be a home office or a bedroom, whichever function its for, you need to feel like you want to be there and are inspired to carry out the function intended.

Interiors is a lot like fashion, you wouldn’t wear the jeans that are on trend if they didn’t fit you right. So don’t make a room dictate to you what it should be, take control and let your personality run through all aspects from the colour, accessories and textures.

Until next time loves!
